As a student you will probably have to pay a great deal of money for your car insurance. The cost of insurance of the under 25’s is significantly higher than for the over 25’s and as most students are under this age the cost of car insurance can be astronomical. There are, of course, many other factors that make student car insurance rather expensive. The majority of students live in rented accommodation, usually in parts of a city which are cheaper to live in rather than desirable, the result being an increased chance of car theft or burglary and therefore an increased chance of insurance claims.

Whilst it is unlikely that you will be able to find a truly amazing deal as a student for your car insurance there are many ways that you can at
least keep the costs down to the minimum. There are three main types of insurance that you can choose from: third party cover simply protects other people on the road but does not cover damage to your own car or yourself. Third party fire and theft includes all of the above but you can also claim for theft or fire damage to your car. Comprehensive insurance is the most expensive but means you will be able to claim for any damage to your car. Many students choose to drive older vehicles that are only worth a few hundred pounds. In this situation you might find it more worthwhile to take out a third party or third party fire and theft policy rather than a fully comprehensive insurance policy. However, if your car is worth much more than the difference in cost between comprehensive insurance and third party insurance it is advisable to choose a comprehensive policy even though it will cost you more.
